Who prevented Indo-Pak skirmishes from escalating into a full- scale war? Trump or Modi?
India claims it went for a ceasefire on its own following beseeching for a ceasefire by Pakistan after it hit it with missiles deep inside. Trump rebuts it. He claims that it he who stopped the escalation.
Over the past one and a half months this claim and counter claim has a taken comical tone.
There have been several occasions since the ceasefire when India denied Trump's claim, while the latter reiterated it without any delay.
The latest episode to add to this spectacle is India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri assertion that prime minister Narendra Modi during a telephonic conversation with Trump dismissed the latter's claim on the ceasefire in no uncertain terms.
But hours later, Trump reiterated his claim. He thanked Modi and Pakistan army chief field marshal General Asim Munir for their help to stop the war.
Congress has demanded that Modi should clear the picture over what he told Trump.
Meanwhile, Trump hosted General Munir on lunch at White House. Trump said at the lunch that he loved Pakistan. Earlier, Munir had said that Trump should be honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize for averting a nuclear war.
The sooner the cloud over who stopped the war is clear, the better it would be for India's standing in the world and for Indo-US relations.
